Facilities

Northumbria Sport is primarily based out of Sport Central, a £30 million state of the art sports facility, that offers students, staff and the general public access to facilities and services that are of the highest quality.

General Opening Hours

Sport Central: 

Weekdays & Weekends: 07:00 - 22:00 

Coach Lane Sports Grounds

Weekdays: 08:00 - 22:00

Weekends: 08:00 - 17:00

Bank Holiday and institutional closures

For the 2025/26 Academic year, Sport Central and Coach Lane Sports Ground will be closed on the following days.​

  • Friday 3 April (Good Friday)
  • Monday 6 April 2026 (Easter Monday)
  • Monday 4 May 2026 (May Bank Holiday)
  • Monday 25 May 2026 (May Bank Holiday)
  • Monday 31 August (August Bank Holiday)

Maintenance Closures

On Saturday 21 February 08:00 - 17:00 Coach Lane Sports Ground will be closed for essential maintenance.

**Associate memberships are available for Northumbria graduates, retired colleagues, students of other institutions, under 18s, over 60s, family members of staff and selected corporate partners. Please bring proof of your eligibility on your first visit. 

 


Staff Salary Deduction

Our Salary Deduction offer is available exclusively to Northumbria University Staff and allows you to get our annual pricing split into monthly payments that are taken directly from your salary. This equates to just £22/month. You can sign up by filling in the form HERE 


BUCS Universal Membership

BUCS Universal is open for Northumbria Staff & Students with a Direct Debit or Annual Membership. BUCS UNIversal allows you to use other university gyms. You will be able to access over 70 university gyms across the country. To get started you'll need to:

  • Download the BUCS Play App
  • Search for Northumbria Sport Community page and join 
  • Request a UNIversal Gym Membership for 2023-2024 from Northumbria Sport 
  • Once accepted, book sessions at other BUCS UNIversal gyms.

SPORT CLUBS 

We have 35 different sport clubs and within those clubs there are over 54 teams that represent the University and compete in British Univeristy & College Sport Leagues (BUCS)

Some of our clubs are availble to 'JUST JOIN' whilst others require you to attend a taster/trial session as these compete in 'BUCS WEEKLY' competitions

Volunteering

The Northumbria Sport Student Leadership programme is a nationally Award Winning Programme that offers you fantastic Volunteer opportunities to work with industry professionals and gain valuable experience and employability skills. We offer opportunities working with National Governing Bodies, external organisations, in the local community, and even internationally through the Volunteer Zambia Project!

As a sport volunteer you have the opportunity to work alongside a mentor to support and help guide you throughout your journey. All volunteers and interns also receive free sport kit, training and access to our Sport Leadership and Innovation Fund, which offers you up to £300 towards additional qualifications and training opportunities to help you stand out.

Junior Camps and Clubs

The Northumbria University Sport Academy utilises the University's leading  sport expertise and facilities to insoire young people to love sport and reach their potential.

The Sport Academy offers a range of activities for young people to engage with at various levels. From supporting children getting active and inspiring a life-long passion for sport and activity at Sport Academy Holiday Kids Camps, to delivering expert coaching and development workshops to support future young athletes achieve their sporting ambitions.

Student Athletes

Team Northumbria compete in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) matches on Wednesday afternoons. Come along and support our teams as they compete against students from Universities across the UK.

BUCS

Northumbria University is a major player in BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) - the premier sporting competition for students across the UK.

We compete in a huge range of BUCS sports across a multitude of different levels and there are opportunities in our competitive teams for all students who have the commitment and dedication to represent Northumbria University.

Our BUCS competitors benefit from some of the best coaches and facilities in the UK. Sport Central, our £30m sport facility provides hundreds of student athletes with a state of the art base for competing and for training. Even if competing is not for you, come along to support your friends as they compete on Wednesdays throughout each semester!

You can represent Northumbria in BUCS in the following sports:

American Football, Athletics, Archery, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Cricket, Equestrian, Football, Futsal, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Jitsu, Judo, Karate, Korfball, Lacrosse, Netball, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Ultimate, Volleyball, Water Polo.

All of our Student Clubs are supported by our BUCS Administrator Amy Hargrave and Sports Club Officer Jade Featherstone, who can also assist if you are unable to reach a member of the Sports Club committee.

 

 

Scholarships

Northumbria University are a leading institution for sport and offers a wide variety of opportunities for students looking to be involved in a quality, competitive programme. This year Northumbria Sport have over 80 teams entered in the British University and Colleague Sport Leagues (BUCS).

Northumbria Sport supports around 175 student athletes each year across a range of sports through our tailored sports scholarship programme. Northumbria Sport offer scholarships to support athletes on their dual career journey, enabling them to develop their sporting ability whilst gaining a quality degree!

We understand the demands of being a student athlete and we aim to support you to have a well-rounded approach to life. Our team of professional support staff work together to offer multi-disciplinary support in a high-performance environment. By combining this with additional opportunities within our volunteering, community, and student development programmes we aim to support you to build on your personal skills and profile in preparation for life after university.

Support Services

Our Focus Sport Athletes and many of our Sport Clubs access our range of Athlete Support Services 

Strength and Conditioning

At Northumbria University we offer strength and conditioning support to our performance athletes and selected teams to enhance performance and reduce the risk of injury. Our qualified S&C coaches will also work closely with our team of physiotherapist and sport science experts to make sure that athletes are getting the best out of their training programme.

 .

We aim to improve our athletes understanding of strength and conditioning by supporting them to develop their training skills and knowledge in order to increase their capacity for training.

Improvement in these factors will result in development of physical abilities such as:

  • Endurance/Durability/Work capacity
  • Movement and Mobility
  • Stability and Robustness
  • Strength and Power

Our programme includes

  • One to one or group coaches sessions
  • Dedicated strength & conditioning suite with 6 Olympic lifting platforms
