Northumbria University’s track and field stars brought home three medals from the 2017 BUCS outdoor athletics championships after kicking off their summer in style.
Lucy Turner bagged gold in the long jump while team-mate Charlie Myers clinched a sliver in the men’s pole vault.
Jack Roach came third in the men’s long jump to cap a superb weekend for Northumbria’s squad - the team adding 34 BUCS points to this season’s overall total.
Elsewhere Laura Voss and Fraser Wright narrowly missed out on podium places after picking up fourth place in the long jump and discus respectively.
“We had a great weekend and the team spirit was there for all to see,” said Wright. “It was a really positive trip and sets things up for an exciting summer.”
Northumbria’s athletes made their presence felt across the full range of track and field events with Turner leading the way.
Her jump of 5.92m secured a well deserved gold while TASS athlete Myers narrowly missed out on top spot after vaulting 5.25m.
Scott Ellis finished fifth in his 1,500m heat while Sean Garmony came home seventh in his 400m semi-final with a time of 52.08secs.
Joe Tricky threw 31.96m to finish 10th in his discus pool and Amy Richard leapt 4.85m in the long jump competition.
Grace Lovell posted a time of 28.05secs in her 200m heat but the weekend belonged to the multi-talented Turner.
In addition to claiming the long jump title she ran 14.54secs in the 100m hurdles, threw 11.02m in the shot final and 34.09m in the javelin. Voss ran 15.35secs in the 110m hurdles after securing fourth spot in the long jump.
“Once again Northumbria’s athletes have proved their quality on the big stage and to come home with 34 BUCS points is a superb achievement,” said the university’s director of sport Colin Stromsoy.
“To claim five top four finishes across such a wide range of sports is fantastic and is reward for all of the hard work the athletes and their coaches have out in during the winter.”
