The Social Week of Action: Spotlight on Percy Hedley Volunteers

Northumbria Sport Volunteers Andrew, Rebecca and Jasmine support Percy Hedley School PE lessons, sport events and after school / lunchtime clubs where they deliver sport sessions to children and young adults with disabilities and additional needs.

In support of the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) the FA and Kick It Out Social Week Of Action they delivered a football PE lesson to Key Stage 2 and 3 children. This was a fantastic morning showcasing the brilliant work our volunteers do at Percy Hedley and profiling #FootballForAll

Although Andrew supports multi-sports events and sessions, as a football coach he has taken a lead on delivering football and has made a huge impact at Percy Hedley this season - here's a review from Andrew...

“I started at Percy Hedley in November 2016 and was asked to provide football coaching sessions over dinner breaks to the primary and secondary speech and language students (who have conditions such as ADHD, ASD, Dyspraxia, and Epilepsy). Most sessions focused on defensive drills and games in order to prepare the teams for an upcoming football tournament that would take place in March. All players showed great enthusiasm and were a joy to work with, making big improvements in a short period of time.

The Wanderers Football Tournament took place on Wednesday 22nd March at the Walker Soccer Dome. 120 students from 10 schools participated in the under 14 and under 16 competitions. Although it was cold and wet, the boys braved the weather showing fantastic team spirit, commitment and sportsmanship. Both teams made a good account of themselves in the tournament against some high level opponents. The hard work both the under 14’s and under 16’s had shown in training was evident throughout the tournament with both teams working tirelessly with and without the ball.

Although all the students played brilliantly throughout the day Paras Duggal was awarded the player of the tournament in the under 16’s for his terrific defensive displays. Not once did the students complain about the results or the weather and should all be immensely proud of their efforts.”

Congratulations to Andrew and the Percy Hedley Team on your achievements throughout the season and at The Wanderers Tournament, and a big thank you to the Northumbria Sport Volunteers for your support.
