Northumbria Shines at the 2025 Great North 5K

This year saw 349 runners take part in the dedicated ‘Northumbria’ wave at the Great North 5k event on Friday 5 September.

The 5k kickstarts the celebrations for Great North Run weekend, attracting everyone from elite runners to those entering a race for the very first time.

Northumbria’s presence was stronger than ever, with the highest attendance to date with an incredible 65% of Northumbria runners being made up of university staff. Among them was Michael Hedley, who not only finished as the fastest Northumbria runner but also claimed the overall race win, crossing the line in 15:33.

Many runners enter for the experience, the atmosphere and to be part of the Northumbria Community, Erin Lambert, Events Coordinator was one of them. This is her second time taking part, she said: “Being part of the Northumbria team is a real privilege and it’s fab to see so many colleagues and students lined up in our branded kit.

She continued, “There was a lovely atmosphere with everyone encouraging each from the starting warm up and throughout the route. I’ve already been telling colleagues to sign up for the 2026 event.”

A huge well done to everyone who took part, we hope you enjoyed the event.
