Northumbria Sport: Your Stepping Stone To A Dream Career

An award-winning journalist has urged students to snap up the chance to become part of Northumbria University Sport’s groundbreaking Volunteer and Intern Programme.

The deadline for applications for a number of exciting sport related roles is this Sunday.

And Charlotte Bowe, who graduated with a degree in journalism in 2014, has described her Media and Journalism internship as ‘pivotal’ to a blossoming career.

“The Team Northumbria Media Team is definitely where my career in journalism started,” said the Northern Echo reporter.

“As an intern I was given amazing access and opportunities to work with the university’s most talented athletes, their coaches and everyone who works behind the scenes at Sport Central.

“I also worked alongside other volunteers and interns as part of a committed and enthusiastic team covering every aspect of sport - from strength and conditioning to event management.

“It’s a professional environment but there is flexibility to work around your studies and there is always help on hand should you need it.”

Bowe won the Society of Editors’ award for the best news interview in July’s National Qualification in Journalism (NQJ) exams.

She completed her fast-track diploma at Press Association Training Newcastle in 2014 alongside fellow Northumbria Sport Media Intern Michael Race - now Crime Reporter with the Oxford Mail.

Both Bowe and Race cut their teeth reporting on Northumbria Sport - following in the footsteps of former Media and Journalism interns Dan Warburton (Sunday Mirror), Andy Fowler (BBC), Jamie Durent (Inverness Courier) and Kieran Gill (Daily Mail).

Northumbria University’s Director Of Sport Colin Stromsoy said: “Charlotte is a fantastic example of the quality of our graduates making their name in the workplace after learning their trade with sport staff at Northumbria.

“We pride ourselves in ensuring our volunteers and interns are in pole position to pursue a career in sport. I would urge anyone with a serious interest in a career in sport to check out the positions on offer.”
