Team Northumbria go into this weekend’s Netball Superleague clash with a new-found confidence according to Victoria Burgess.
TN’s assistant coach has enjoyed her time on court again but looks set for a return to the bench with Jaydene Robinson back from suspension.
On or off the court, Burgess is relishing the chance to end Loughborough Lightning’s unbeaten run at Sport Central tomorrow night.
“Te (Aroha Keenan) and I have been looking at Loughborough and their strengths and we’ve worked on certain areas of our game,” she said.
“The win against Severn Stars has given the team a real confidence boost and proven that we can play consistently through all four quarters.
“It had been a long time coming - every game we’d played we’d improved in some way. It’s just about being consistent.
“Each game for us is a target game and want to win so we’ll be going back to the drawing board and looking at what we can do to challenge Loughborough.
“I think all wins give you a confidence boost but especially when there’s a big difference in the scoreline like there was against the Stars.”
Burgess has a wealth of experience at the top of the game and has reprised her playing career following season-ending injuries affecting Kati Cooper and Leah Kennedy.
“I’ve got a little bit of experience behind me so I choose not to run so much and use my brain instead,” she added.
“I think using my understanding of the game works well for me nowadays. I can use my body and find certain spaces or angles on the court.
“I suppose my presence settles the girls down a little bit and brings a bit of calmness to squad.
“We’re all playing for each other and I think the difference is the communication on court.
“We’ve got some youth in our team and those players are stepping up and playing well. There’s no reason why we can’t win against Loughborough.”
