Looking to get active without the pressure of competition? Just PLAY is your go-to sports programme for casual, inclusive, and sociable sessions. Best of all, it’s completely FREE for all students!

Whether you want to try something new, meet new people, or blow off steam after lectures, Just PLAY makes it easy to turn up, get involved, and have fun. No experience? No problem. All sessions are open to all abilities and led by friendly Just PLAY interns who create a relaxed and welcoming environment.

Booking is essential. You will need to book onto all Just Play sessions via the Northumbria Sport App!

Netball
Netball is a fast-paced, non-contact team sport played between two teams of seven players. It focuses on movement, positioning, and teamwork. The goal is to pass the ball through the court and score by shooting it through a raised net.

Climbing
Indoor climbing is a physical and mental challenge where participants climb vertical walls using designated holds. No prior experience is necessary – all equipment is provided, and trained staff will support you throughout the session.

Handball
Handball is a fast, exciting game that blends elements of football and basketball. Teams aim to score by throwing a ball into the opposing team’s goal.

Indoor Cricket

Indoor cricket is a simplified, faster version of the traditional game. It’s perfect for beginners and focuses on fun, fast scoring, and quick rotation between batting and fielding.

Indoor Hockey

Indoor hockey is a scaled-down, faster version of outdoor field hockey, played on a hard court with fewer players and no hitting of the ball allowed.

Dodgeball

Dodgeball is a fast, fun, and energetic game. The aim is simple: eliminate players on the opposing team by hitting them with soft foam balls.

Mixed Netball

A social and inclusive version of netball where all genders play together in the same team. The rules and court setup are the same as standard netball.

Basketball 3v3

Basketball 3v3 is a half-court version of basketball played with three players per team. It’s fast, physical, and all about quick decision-making and skill.

Badminton

A classic racquet sport played in singles or doubles format. Badminton is easy to pick up and great for building reflexes, balance, and coordination.

Pickleball
Pickleball is a fast-growing paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, ping pong, and badminton. Played on a smaller court, it’s great for all ages and skill levels.

Basketball

Basketball is a dynamic 5v5 team sport focusing on dribbling, passing, and shooting. It’s a great workout and perfect for players of all skill levels.

Soft Tennis

Soft tennis is a lighter, slower version of traditional tennis using softer balls and slightly different racquets. It’s perfect for beginners and casual play.

Indoor Lacrosse

Lacrosse is a fast, exciting team sport where players use a stick to catch, carry, and shoot a ball into the opponent’s goal. Indoor play offers a faster-paced, smaller-team experience.

Volleyball

Volleyball is a fantastic team sport for building coordination and communication. Rally-based and fast-moving, it's one of the most social sports around.

 

Just PLAY - Frequently Asked Questions

What is Just PLAY? Just PLAY is a casual, non-competitive sports programme designed for students who want to get active in a relaxed and sociable environment. It's all about trying new sports, meeting new people, and having fun – with zero pressure and completely free!

How do I book onto a session? All Just PLAY sessions must be booked in advance through the Northumbria Sport App. This helps us manage capacity and ensure everyone has a great experience.

Is there a cost to attend? No! Just PLAY is completely free for all Northumbria University students.

Do I need a sports membership? No membership is required. Just PLAY is free and open to all students, whether or not you have a Northumbria Sport membership.

What if I've never played before? That's absolutely fine! Just PLAY sessions are open to all abilities and experience levels. Our friendly Just PLAY interns create a welcoming environment where beginners are encouraged to give it a go.

Do I need to attend every week? Not at all. There's no commitment required – just book the sessions that suit your schedule and drop in when you're available.

Can I try multiple sports? Yes! You're welcome to book onto as many different Just PLAY sessions as you like. It's a great way to explore different activities and find what you enjoy.

What should I wear and bring? Wear comfortable sportswear and appropriate trainers for the activity. All equipment is provided, so just bring yourself and a water bottle!

I'm not a student – can I take part? Just PLAY sessions are exclusively for current Northumbria University students. You'll need your student details to book through the app.
