Success in Sheffield: BUCS Nationals Round-Up

BUCS Nationals took place between 23 and 25 February, seeing 45 Northumbria students travel to Sheffield to represent the University across:  Athletics, Badminton, Climbing, Fencing, Karate and Swimming.

The action-packed weekend was a success, capped off with medals in Karate. Northumbria Sport would like to congratulate every athlete who travelled to the competition to represent the University on a national scale.

Firstly, congratulations to Karate who picked up a bronze medal in both the team Kata and women’s team Kumite. Team Kata was made up of: Cenya Russell, David Windram, Dave McNeil, with Cenya Russell, Rebecca Bradburn and Daisie Winter, making up the women’s Team Kumite. Students mentioned were part of a team of 11 that all played their part in representing Northumbria over the weekend – well done all!

Swimming also tasted success, achieving third place in the Women’s ‘B’ Medley Relay final. The team was made up of Megan Cairns, Katie Stobbs, Lara Turner and Rebecca Smith, with 11 more students completing the squad across several other events throughout the weekend.

12 students made up the athletics squad, competing in events such as: 60 metres, 60 metres hurdles, 400 metres, 800 metres, 1500 metres, 3000 metres and long jump. The result of the weekend went to Sport Scholar, Luca Minale, who achieved an impressive sixth place in the men’s 3000 metres.

Congratulations are also in order for Northumbria Climbing, who had three students competing, and Northumbria Badminton, who had two students involved across the singles and doubles.

Our final mention goes to Fencing, who saw two students compete in the Men's Epee and Men's Sabre.

Well done all on a fantastic weekend, every student who travelled to Sheffield should be incredibly proud of their achievements!
