BUCS Nationals 2025: A weekend of success for Northumbria University

With five finals in swimming, bronze medals in karate and outstanding athletics and badminton performances.

The BUCS Nationals held in Sheffield from 14 – 16 February, proved to be a phenomenal weekend for Northumbria University Sports teamswith five finals in swimming, bronze medals in karate and outstanding athletics and badminton performances.

 

Here’s a rundown of the success of the weekend:

Swimming

Lara Turner secured fifth place in the 200m IM B-Final and a 10th place finish in the 50m Fly A-Final. Lara also qualified for the 200m Fly B-Final but made the strategic decision to withdraw to focus on the relay event later that evening.

Women’s relay secured sports in both B finals the 4x100 team came seventh and the 4x100 medley team achieved an impressive second place finish. Overall, the swim team competed 70 swims and eight swimmers achieved personal bests. A highlight of the weekend included Northumbria Swimmer Chris qualifying for the British Championships, making this a significant milestone within his swimming career.

Karate

Northumbria's Karate team delivered strong performances bringing home bronze medals for the Individual Kumite for both the Men’s and Women’s divisions. In the Men’s Team Kumite, the squad placed an impressive fifth overall, adding to Northumbria’s medal collection and underlining their competitive strength.

Badminton

Northumbria's Badminton team showcased skill and determination throughout the tournament. Sian and Ellen advanced to the Round of 32 in the qualification draw, proving their resilience in a highly competitive sport and ability to cope under pressure.

 

Athletics

Jess Sails smashed the tracks reaching the finals and coming in eighth place. Reaching the finals requires amazing skill and drive and Jess’s performance highlighted the university’s presence in high-level athletics competitions.

The incredible performance for Northumbria University’s athletes underpins the University's aim to boost top tier athletic talent. Northumbria’s student athletes continue to grow and prove they can compete at the highest level while embodying teamwork and sportsmanship.
