Northumbria Swimming Team Excel in BUCS Short Course Championship

Northumbria Swimming team deliver an amazing performance achieving 42 PBs and competed in 119 events across three days

Northumbria swimming team delivered an amazing performance at the recent BUCS Short Course Finals, held at Pond Forge Sheffield. From 15 November to 17 November,the team competed against top performing athletes from Universities from all over the country where many of the Athletes achieved personal bests (PBs).

Highlights from the event

36 Athletes participated in the three-day Championships, competing in 119 events showcasing their dedication to their team and the sport. By the end of the Championships, the team achieved 42 PBs emphasising their hard work and training in preparation.The team faced challenges getting all 36 athletes accommodation and travel although, Rebecca Smith Swim Captain emphasises “All the challenges we faced in the run-up to the weekend are far outweighed by the success of the weekend!”

Some Standout Performances Included

Lara Turner - Competing in multiple events, including the 200m final Medley (Fifth B Final) and 50m Butterfly (10th in the A Final), showcasing her swimming versatility and consistency.

Mixed Relay Team - Including swimmers Lucas Lowery, Matt Yeomans, Lara Turner, and Rebecca Smith (Eighth Place in C Final), demonstrating a strong united and collective performance.

Christopher Justice - Won “Swimmer of the Weekend” award, for his exceptional efforts and dedication throughout the weekend. He achieved six seconds off his previous PB at the 100m Breaststroke and three seconds of his 50m Breaststroke. This showcased his ability to succeed under pressure, and consistently push himself.

The team’s swim captain, Rebecca Smith said: “We’re a team that keeps growing each year so it's been amazing to see the team do even better than we did at BUCS last year, which was already an impressive year!” 

"Seeing the whole squad come together every evening to cheer on their teammates was a reminder of what makes this team so special." 

The team regularly updated their Instagram page highlighting the team’s success and teamwork throughout the Championship. The swimmers’ ability to stay focused, support each other and perform to the best of their ability when it really mattered, highlighted the spirit of Northumbria Sport.
