Northumbria Sport Clubs take on Movember

Find out how our sport teams got on this Movember, raising funds and awareness surrounding men’s health.

Throughout the month of November, Rugby Union, Hockey, Cricket, Water Polo, Rowing and Athletics all took part in the globally recognised “Movember” campaign. By committing to growing their moustaches out for the month, alongside other charitable events, the campaign allows our sports teams to raise awareness surrounding the need to prioritise men’s health, as well as raising donations for Movember to continue their charitable work.

As well as growing some: “questionable moustaches,” Callum Todd, charity officer from Rugby Union, explains how some of the team also ran the Tyne Moor Park Run in fancy dress, stating how: “This was a physical challenge for some but was mostly used to raise awareness of the fundraising campaign we are doing for Movember.”

The team have raised just under £200 so far, with Vice President Ben Lumm explaining: “It’s a club wide effort, with players from the firsts all the way down to the social boys all getting involved for a great cause.”

Lumm continues: “One of our aims this year has been to bring the club close together and charity drives like Movember are a great way to do that… everyone has found a way to get involved whether that be growing their tashe, joining in for a charity run or making a donation to the cause.”

Taking fundraising efforts above and beyond, Northumbria Rowing’s Alfie Tyerman decided to raise money for Movember by running the entire yellow line of the Newcastle Metro! The rainy run, consisting of 61KM and 42 Metro stations, took Alfie eight hours – raising a whopping £300 as a result.

Northumbria Hockey’s Movember total currently stands at a fantastic £433, with special mentions extended to Georgie Rhodes and Lucy Holligan, who raised £170 and £120 respectively. An incredible effort by everyone involved!

Cricket’s total is just shy of £110, with the team set to run for 24 hours straight as a final fundraising event.

Lastly, Water Polo have fundraised an amazing £248 this Movember, with a big shoutout to top fundraiser Billy Bettison.

Movember is a charity organisation, founded in 2003, with the aim of changing the face of men’s health. To do this, they aim to target three areas in particular: mental health, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. Donations raised are used to increase awareness and implement the Movember campaign every year, as well as invest in crucial men’s health initiatives – with over 1250 men’s health projects funded globally so far.
