Northumbria University new boy Christian Behrens has described the chance to study for a Masters degree on Tyneside as a ‘massive bonus’ after inking a deal to play for Britain’s most successful ball club.
The 23-year-old power forward is central to Newcastle Eagles’ roster with pace and youth at the heart of Fabulous Flournoy’s new-look side.
But Behrens will also offer Northumbria men’s basketball playcaller Marc Steutel an exciting option as the university side go in search of BUCS glory.
“When I was in talks to sign for Newcastle I wasn’t aware that there was a chance to further my education and play minutes for Northumbria at the same time,” said the GB/US dual passport holder.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity and a massive bonus. It kinda came out of the blue and I’m still in the process of finalising my course.
“But I know Scott [Martin] and Drew [Lasker] have been playing BUCS basketball for the last two seasons and they have said some really positive things about the Northumbria programme.”
Behrens was speaking at the annual Newcastle Eagles season launch held at the city’s Pitcher and Piano bar on the quayside.
The men in black begin their BBL Championship title assault later this month following a series of positive pre-season run-outs.
And Behrens can’t wait to get to work following stints in Spain and with Surrey Scorchers last season.
“As soon as my agent told me about the interest from Newcastle I knew it was the right move,” he added. “It’s the best move for me and for my career.
“I felt honoured to be offered the chance to come here and jumped at the opportunity.
“I have the chance to become a better player and help a great club win more silverware.
“It’s very exciting to be accepted by my team-mates and the fans at a time when the roster is going through a few changes.
“I felt we showed out potential in the European tournament at Sport Central earlier this month but there’s so much more to come for this team.”
