Northumbria Netball Clashes Raise £200

The Zambia Team’s latest fundraiser for the Volunteer Zambia Project saw staff and student teams from across Northumbria University taking part in a friendly netball tournament at Sport Central this week!

The Volunteer Zambia students took on the roles of umpiring, MC-ing, and providing Krispy Kremes for the occasion!

Five student teams competed against each other in group stages followed by the knock out rounds.

And each round became increasingly competitive with overall victory in sight.

The courts played host to a mixture of netball, volleyball, basketball, Rugby League and football players – some even came in self-elected fancy dress!

And the final was a tense affair before Team ‘Disney Forever’ came away as Zambia Netball 2018 Champions!

The staff tournament was equally as competitive and saw colleagues who usually work together on a daily basis going head to head on court!

Some high scoring games saw the table chop and change throughout the group stages with our two Northumbria Sport teams facing each other in the final.

Sporty C v Sue Vout’s Barmy Army drew in a bumper crowd – with Team Sporty C clinching the winning goal in the last few seconds and narrowly missing a shoot-out tie!

Volunteer Zambia staff member Sarah Stephenson said: “I’d like to congratulate the winning teams and say a huge thank you to everyone who took part – raising more than £200 for the Volunteer Zambia Project.”

The next tournament is the highly anticipated fancy dress dodgeball event taking place on April 25! In the meantime, the Zambia team are selling Newcastle Eagles’ home match tickets for only £8 a ticket with £3 of each ticket sale going directly to the Volunteer Zambia Project – please contact sarah.stephenson@northumbria.ac.uk for more information.
