Northumbria University W1 Rugby Union capped off another incredible season this week, meeting Edinburgh University in the BUCS Super Rugby final at Twickenham.
It was Northumbria’s second BUCS final in a row, but they were unable to make up for last year’s disappointment and suffered a 48-5 defeat.
“To play at a stadium like Twickenham is a massive achievement,” said head of rugby, Darren Fearn.
“Last week they beat Cardiff 19-17 to get to the final and that was a magnificent result against a side who they’d lost to in the final last year.
“Playing rugby in a stadium like that is a special occasion for any player and it was a great day for everyone involved.
“Hopefully, they’ll put the result to the back of their minds and focus on the fact that they’ve played at Twickenham.”
Having lost to Cardiff in last year’s final, it was a difficult result for Northumbria to take.
However, Fearn believes there is an abundance of positives to take away from their performance both domestically and in the run up to the final.
“It was a tough one on the day,” added Fearn. “They started well and had spells in the game where they looked promising.
“There were some good performances. Caity Mattinson kicked well when she came on and Jo Brown ran nearly the length of the pitch to score Northumbria’s try.
“I think the emphasis has to be placed on the win over Cardiff – they have an incredible record, so for the girls to beat them was an incredible achievement.
“The route to the final was filled with some really positive results, so it’s been a very successful season on many fronts.
“The girls should be really proud to have made it to Twickenham and need to concentrate on another impressive season.”
