The Social Week of Action - Spotlight on Goalball Volunteering

Mary Ashley is the Northumbria Sport Goalball Volunteer and she assists with sessions and the running of the Newcastle Goalball Club, which she has been doing for the past two seasons. In support of the BUCS, FA and KickItOut Social Week of Action we wanted to celebrate Mary's impact in disability sport and highlight our partnership with the Newcastle Goalball Club.

“My experience with North East Goalball has really expanded my understanding of disability coaching and the day to day challenges people face. Sport is a way to keep healthy, meet people and a passion for all those involved and it has been a joy to work alongside Andy Hope and Goalball UK this past year.” (Mary Ashley, Goalball Volunteer)

“Mary has been volunteering with Newcastle Goalball Club over the past two seasons. Since joining, she has actively increased her knowledge of the game and has been a supportive assistant coach to both the players and myself. As all of our team have a visual impairment, it can sometimes take a while for a bond to establish with coaches and volunteers. Mary’s continued involvement has enabled this bond to establish and it is clear that the players respect the time, knowledge and input that Mary brings to the club. At the start of this season, Mary started to bring ideas of how both the club and certain individuals can improve and specific training drills were created from her ideas. Creating a link with Northumbria Sport has proven to be very beneficial for the club." (Andy Hope, Newcastle Goalball Club)

This is fantastic to hear about Mary's impact at the club and a big thank you Mary and Andy for your continued support!
