Northumbria University’s Stephanie Carrillo-Chavez is taking on the world next month after the rising star of British bench press was selected to represent her country.
The NORTH powerlifter heads to Finland in May to compete in the World Classic Bench Press Championship.
And coach Matthew Gill couldn’t be prouder of a star student athlete who continues to go from strength the strength.
“Stephanie was picked after her outstanding performance at the British Bench press championship in February where she benched 110kg,” he said.
“She took the junior record by 10kg but also broke the senior record that originally stood at 106.
“Stephanie went on to win the junior class and the senior category too so I wasnlt surprised when GB came calling.”
The third Women’s & Men’s IPF OPEN, Sub-Jnr, Junior & Masters World Classic Bench Press Championship 2018 takes place in Vantaa from May 13-19.
Carillo-Chavez has been nominated by GB in the 84kg category and Gill added: “This is fantastic news for the NORTH Powerlifting programme and is further proof that the club continues to go from strength to strength.
“We’re wishing Stephanie all the best and I’m sure she’ll do Northumbria proud.”
