Northumbria Shut Out By Classy Consett

Colin Stromsoy hailed Consett as ‘an outstanding team’ after Team Northumbria lost 2-0 at Coach Lane.

After keeping a clean sheet for 80-plus minutes, TN conceded two goals in the last 10 due to swift counter attacking play from the visitors.

“Consett, without a shadow of a doubt, are one of the best teams we’ve played in the Northern League in about three years,” said Stromsoy.

“That’s the first time this season a team has really dominated the possession over us but we had moments where we had some great spells of possession too.

“They had chances throughout that match but we stayed resolute and the irony of it is, that their goals came after we had counter attacking opportunities.

“The first goal, Andrei Ardelan was caught offside and Consett took the free kick quickly and unpicked us.

“The second goal, we pushed Liam MacNamara up just to mix it up a bit and they got the goal right at the death.”

Despite picking up their sixth loss of the season, Stromsoy’s men put in a good performance, staying strong at the back for the most part.

Full back Aidan Heywood stood out on the day, fuelling TN’s most promising attacks and staying tight in his defensive duties.

“I’ve been more upset with the team when we’ve won in the past,” continued Stromsoy.

“I’m gutted about the result but, in many ways, I’m really pleased with the performance.

“There’s still lots of learning to be done. We knew this was always going to be a tough season, a one very different to the last couple of seasons where we’d be winning most matches and dominating games.

“We’ve been dominating games and not scoring this season. Against Consett we haven’t dominated the game but we’ve also not scored when we’ve had opportunities.

“We’ll get there. I’ve got no doubt about that.”
