Northumbria Send Penrith Packing

Team Northumbria delighted manager Colin Stromsoy and made it two wins from two in the Northern League Division One after a comfortable 2-0 victory against Penrith at Coach Lane.

“Every player but one player who started was a student and that says it all for me,” said Stromsoy.

“We work hard with them and they do phenomenally well. I am very proud of the guys who put it [the effort] and work really hard.

“[Penrith] huffed and puffed, ran a lot and credit to them as they were well organised. But I thought we were better organised, particularly in the second half where their chances only really came from individual errors.”

TN broke the deadlock after 38 minutes when Josh Bynoe’s cross-field pass found last year’s top marksman Ben Dibb-Fuller – the striker cut inside onto his left foot and beat the keeper with a low drive into the bottom right corner.

After scoring his goal Dibb-Fuller was taken off before half time for what Stromsoy explained was a broken nose.

“We sent him off to hospital and we have Loughborough on Wednesday but if he is concussed then we have to follow the concussion protocol,” added Stromsoy.

“It might be that he is out for Loughborough and Runcorn on Saturday but we will have to wait and see.”

The second half provided chances for both sides but it was TN who managed to capitalise as provider turned goalscorer and Bynoe slotted into the bottom corner after latching onto a through ball on 55 minutes.

With 75 spectators watching on in the windy conditions TN saw the game out after 90 minutes and now sit 13th in the table after taking nine points from their last six fixtures.

Stromsoy is now looking towards the following games in the league, especially promotion hopefuls Morpeth Town who travel to TN at the end of the month.

“When you’ve got teams who are right at the very top there is no expectation,” explained the Northumbria University head coach.

“We are good enough and we know the areas of our performances that we have to work on.”

TN tackle Runcorn in the FA Vase on Saturday (3pm ko).
