Northumbria’s Taggart Sinks Winless Brandon

By Austin Orton

Team Northumbria’s sensational start to the season continued as new signing Dan Taggart’s hat trick helped them to a 5-0 away win at Brandon United.

The three points saw the Coach Lane side jump to second place in the Northern League Division Two table and stretch their unbeaten streak to six games.

Along with the three goals from former Morpeth Town striker Taggart a brace from midfielder Kevin Carr ensured this was an emphatic victory for the visitors.

Despite the clinical finishing TN showed it was rather the work at the other end of the pitch which caught the eye of assistant manager Derek Forrest.

“With us leading 5-0 at half time our aim was to keep the clean sheet and I’m delighted we managed to do that,” said Forrest.

“Of course the amount of goals we’re scoring is brilliant but to stay concentrated throughout the second half and limit them to a few half chances is a real credit.

“I knew we’d continue to get the chances in the second half and honestly we could have won by double figures if it wasn’t for their goalkeeper.

“I thought he (Brandon’s goalkeeper) had a sublime game – he couldn’t have done much about the goals and he’s produced some heroic saves at the end.

“I was actually talking to his Dad at the final whistle and he said our performance was ‘the very best he has seen in the Northern League for years’ and he watches a lot of games.

“To hear things like that just shows you how hard the boys work and they should take full credit for that and be proud of themselves.

“We now have to move on from that game and prepare for our next – the lads will deservedly have the bank holiday off and then straight back into it come Tuesday.”

With TN in fine form the players will be eager to get back on the field and they won’t have to wait long as they host Crook Town this Wednesday evening (7:30pm ko).
