Northumbria Graduates Hit The Headlines

Northumbria University students can get the inside scoop on the cut and thrust world of multi-media journalism this month when two of the UK’s rising stars return to Tyneside to talk all things news and sport.

Kieran Gill and Charlotte Bowe both served time as members of the Northumbria Sport Media Team under the watchful eye of Media Manager and senior journalist Simon Rushworth.

And after graduating from the Journalism School both Gill and Bowe enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks to become key players on the regional and national media scene.

Now the pair have been confirmed to appear at the 2017 Northumbria Sport Media Schowcase event - taking place at Sport Central on Friday October 27.

They will join their former Media Manager to address an invited audience as part of a panel discussing the big issues in journalism and the pressures facing the new breed of multi-media hack.

“It’s always great to come back to where it all started and to see so many familiar faces who helped me on the way,” said Gill, who secured a full-time Daily Mail sports contract earlier this year after cutting his teeth at Mail Online.

“The time I spent on the Media Team at Northumbria was hugely enjoyable and it persuaded me that I wanted to become a senior reporter covering sport.

“I learnt my trade watching Northumbria’s teams in action in BUCS and national league competition.

“And in a very short space of time I went from quizzing Colin Stromsoy at Coach Lane to interviewing Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge.”

Gill may well reveal who he believes to be the better coach at the Media Showcase event but one thing’s for sure - Hartlepool’s answer to Henry Winter always has plenty to say on the world of sport.

Motor racing fanatic Bowe scooped an award for the best news piece by UK journalists taking their senior exams earlier this year.

And the nationally recognised rising star of the Northern Echo is forging a career as a general news reporter following a successful stint on the Northumbria Media Team.

“I’m looking forward to giving current students an insight into the news and how regional journalism works,” she said. “And I can’t wait to get back to Sport Central where the memories of Stan Calvert wins will come flooding back!”

This year’s Media Showcase event is due to start at 10.30am on Friday October 27. To book your place now visit https://northumbriasport.com/event/northumbria-sport-media-showcase/186
