Northumbria Edge Closer To Wembley

Team Northumbria have secured their place in the next round of the FA Vase after a 2-0 victory over Durham City.

Josh Bynoe put the home side ahead after four minutes with a highlight reel worthy strike, with Robbie Spence doubling TN’s lead just before the break, heading home from a corner.

“In the first half we played some fantastic football,” said head coach Colin Stromsoy.

“It was really great stuff and we need to start doing that for long periods of time and more consistently.

“Second half I thought we were a bit loose at times. Matty Lowrie was a bit loose at the beginning of the second half but then I thought he really came in to his own as the half went on.

“It’s slightly disappointing we only scored two goals, we’ve hit the bar about three times and we should have had more quality in the final third frankly.

“But Durham’s keeper certainly put in a good performance - he was man of the match by a mile in the first half and pulled out some absolutely fantastic saves.”

With a Northern League clash away to North Shields on Wednesday and BUCS competition on the horizon next month, the FA Vase gave TN coaching staff an opportunity to experiment with squad selection in preparation.

“Overall, our forward play was top level at times and from a coaching perspective it’s satisfying to see players like Sam Read and Nick Hay coming back and getting some minutes on the pitch,” added Stromsoy.

TN look to be on the up with two clean sheets and six goals in their last two games.
