Dodge, Duck and Dive for Zambia!

Fundraiser Fridays are back at Sport Central with a Christmas-themed dodgeball tournament taking place on Friday 15 December between 13:30 – 17:00 with all money raised going towards the Volunteer Zambia project!

Students, alongside Northumbria Sport Staff, are invited to come along and show off their dodgeball skills, all whilst raising money.

The tournament will consist of teams made up of between 6-8 people, at a price of £4 per player, or £25 for a full team. Be sure to dust off your Santa hats and dig out your Christmas jumpers, as the event is festive fancy dress.

Rules of the game will be outlined before the tournament gets underway – so don’t worry if you have never picked up a dodgeball before, the festive fundraiser is all about students getting involved and having fun, as well as fundraising.

Proceeds generated from the tournament are in aid of the Volunteer Zambia project. The yearly initiative, supported by Northumbria Sport and seven other UK universities, which offers those involved a once in a lifetime opportunity to work on an International Sport for Development programme.

The Volunteer Zambia team, made up of six students and one Northumbria Sport staff member, will be based in Lusaka, Zambia; and spend eight weeks volunteering within the local community to positively impact lives through the use of sport. Holding the title of ‘Student Sport Development Officer,’ students work alongside the Zambian NGO, Sport in Action, to deliver coaching sessions across netball, basketball and women’s football. Sport in Action not only work with students to deliver coaching sessions, but also to generate outreach within the community and build a sustainable structure at allocated hub sites across Lusaka.

Northumbria Sport are proud to continuously offer this opportunity year on year, however, it is not possible without fundraising. This means before embarking on their time in Zambia, the team has to generate funds via both group and personal fundraising efforts. Coming down to Sport Central on 15 December in festive fancy dress offers students and staff a great way to donate towards a worthwhile cause – all whilst making memories and being active amongst friends.

We look forward to seeing you on the court!
