Derby Delight For Northumbria

Team Northumbria secured their second win of the season with a slick performance against Newcastle Benfield.

The Northumbria lads looked at their most comfortable all season as they took the lead early in the first half thanks to a well-constructed team goal.

And the hosts saw the game out for a 1-0 victory and all three points.

From the get go TN attacked Benfield, not giving them an inch of space to work with.

The hosts didn’t have to wait long to see their efforts pay off, a precise pass from Gerard Richardson picked out Lewis Shorrock on the right-hand side.

Shorrock then drove a low pass into the box, finding Andrei Ardelean, who produced a good finish to put TN 1-0 up after six minutes.

TN looked to have found their rhythm early on, continually threatening with great spells of passing play.

Benfield soon carved out their first real chance of the game, with a direct approach, driving into the box only to be stopped by a heroic sliding tackle from Matthew Lowrie.

At half time Northumbria looked the better side. However, both teams had worked the opposing keepers throughout the first half.

The first chance of the second half fell to Benfield’s No.10, John Campbell. After a well-placed through ball, Campbell found himself 1v1 against Stefan Holden, only to strike the ball well over cross bar.

Benfield then began to dominate the second half, in terms of possession, as they searched for an equaliser. However, Northumbria’s defence stayed strong in what was a physical half.

Lowrie continued to put in an impressive shift and the centre half made a number of vital tackles, whilst also finding the time for the odd winding run forward deep into Benfield’s half.

TN held out and came away with their second win of the season in the Northern League, making them the best performing team of the three promoted last term.
