20 year old Northumbria student Oscar has been added to Newcastle Falcons Senior Academy Squad for 2026/27
From university rugby to a full-time academy contract, Oscar Usher’s journey is a testament to his resilience, commitment, and ambition.
Starting off studying at Leeds Beckett and transferring to Northumbria as a Sport Scholar, accumulating over 12 appearances withinof the University's first and XV teams. Oscar's performances highlighted the ethos and spirit of Northumbria University Rugby, showcasing commitment, discipline, and dedication.
Oscar is heading into his final year at Northumbria and will still be a vital player in the Northumbria Rugby team. Showing his dedication to the Northumbria University's rugby team as a critical player for the team's success. Oscar was only invited to train with the Ffalcons earliery this season and will now be doing so on a full timefull-time basis going into 2026/27.
Newcastle Falcons Head of Academy James Ponton stated,: “He has a relatively low training age because he has not been in a full-time environment, but we believe he has a very high ceiling and can add a lot to the squad.”
As Oscar commencesdelves into his first full time training environmentcontract, it will be exciting to see him grow as a player and succeed within the wider rugby industry and environment. Balancing a demanding University schedule alongside the intensity of high performing rugby will requires immense discipline and sacrifice. Oscar has consistently showcased the ability to push beyond limits and which is emphasised through his ability to succeed on the pitch.
As Oscar enters this new chapter within his rugby career he acts as an inspiration for young athletes at Northumbria University. An example of how dedication and discipline can open the door tofor amazing opportunities. As his journey just begins, the best for Oscar's rugby career is yet to come.
