Following on from the fantastic Kwik Cricket Tournament organised by Northumbria Cricket Club, this month’s FUNdraiser was brought together by the Northumbria Netball club. This mixed netball tournament saw 20 teams compete to take home the inaugural Netball Fundraiser Friday Trophy. Fundraiser Fridays give students the opportunity to raise money for a charity that is close to them. Student Minds focuses on empowering students and members of the university community to look after their own mental health and support each other. A great one to support at this event!
With 20 teams entered it was set to be an extremely fun filled afternoon. The action kicked off at 1pm with all teams raring to go and get started. The Christmas spirit was well and truly shining through with an extremely good effort from the teams on the costume front, reindeer ears and tinsel was the dress code for the day. But that certainly didn’t detract from the competitiveness coming from all the teams!
The three courts of the Sport Central main arena were in full swing with the matches well underway, there were plenty of goals being scored from the first whistle and all teams were getting stuck into the action. With a solid effort being put in by everyone, the draw whittled down through the rounds leaving the top eight teams to play for the top spot in the quarter finals.
On the sidelines, team supporters were there in full force cheering on their favourite teams, they brought a great positive atmosphere to Sport Central and spurred on the teams until the very end!
In the end it was the mixed Netball 1 and Men’s Rugby Union team who triumphed to secure the top spot in the tournament taking the win in this month’s FUNdraiser Friday. They showed solid performances in all of their games throughout the day having the upper hand on all of their rivals.
Sport Development Officer Keir Tattersdill commented;
“It was fantastic to see so many students turn out to raise money for an amazing charity, I know firsthand how hard the Netball Club worked on this event and they deserve a huge amount of credit for their fundraising and how well organised the event was’
But crowning the winning team of the FUNdraiser wasn’t the most important part of the tournament for the Netball club as they were set on raising big numbers for Student Minds. With the previous Kwick Cricket tournament raising over £800, the Netball club wanted to follow in their footsteps. And they did just that, raising a grand total of £909! This will be a massive contribution to Student Minds and could still increase with the donation link not closing for a couple more days! So, there’s still time to make your contribution!
With another FUNdraiser Friday complete, we can’t wait for the next one! Keep an eye on the Northumbria Sport socials for details… and why not help hit £1000 for Student Minds before Christmas. Click the link to donate.
