BUCS Preview: Super Rugby

Team Northumbria head of Rugby Union Darren Fearn is delighted with his side’s start to this year’s BUCS Super Rugby competition.

Heading into match day four, Northumbria sit second in the table and Fearn is excited about the free-flowing displays of attacking rugby his side are producing - especially when it comes to picking up bonus points.

“We’re progressing pretty well,” said Fearn. “To win two out of three and to get two points from the game we lost is a good start.

“I’m really happy with how we’re putting away our chances.

“I’m happy because it’s something we addressed from last year.

“Last year we had four [bonus points] all season and this season we’ve got four already so that’s something I’m really happy about. It’s extra points up for grabs at the end of the day.”

Despite tomorrow’s opponents Nottingham Trent not having won this season, Fearn was adamant that his side would not be complacent.

“They’ll be a physical outfit,” he added. “They’ve got an affiliation with Nottingham who are a Championship club with experienced players.

“But I know that if we perform at our best we’ll come away with something.

“It’s a big test because they’ll be looking to come here and cause an upset but we’ve got to get hyped for this game.

“In some ways I think it helps that we were down at the bottom last season. We knew that we weren’t a bad rugby team but we’d lost a few games.

“It sounds clichéd but we’ve just got to keep grinding teams down and make sure we’re up for it because they’ll be up for it too.”

And while Fearn stressed that his side was all about the team, he was delighted with the individual performances of some of his players.

“Ruari Howarth, at 15, is playing some of the best rugby I’ve seen him play for us,” he added.

“I think we’re starting to see George [Wacokecoke] get into his stride now and James Christie has carried on his excellent form from last season.

“The forward pack has all upped their game too so long may it continue!”

TN kick off at 7pm at Kingston Park. For more details visit the Sport Central website.
