BUCS Focus: M2 Volleyball

Northumbria University M2 Volleyball finished the season on a high, taking second place in their BUCS league.

Sport Central played host to the fight for runners-up spot as Northumbria took the honours with a 3-1 win over rivals York.

Coach David Goodchild knew his team were the underdogs going into this vital clash but didn’t let that effect their performance.

“It was a game on paper that we should have lost but the boys have stuck in and turned it around so well done to them,” said Goodchild.

“First set we didn’t turn up and there were too many errors. I had a bit of a pop at the guys after set one and made a few changes. Set two they started to play a lot better volleyball.”

The first set saw Northumbria edged out 25-19. However, whatever coach Goodchild said after the first set seemed to work as TN closed the door on York for the next three sets, securing the points and second place.

“York have got some really good players but I think they took it a bit light and once we got on top we didn’t let them back in,” added Goodchild.

“James Pearce played in a different position to his usual spot and had a really good game but overall I think it was a good team performance – everyone played their part.”
