BUCS Focus: M1 Rugby League

Kingston Park was the setting for an M1 Rugby League semi-final showdown between Northumbria University and the University of Leeds, which was comfortably won by the home side.

Northumbria were quick out the block scoring two tries, with conversions by Tom Shaw, including an excellent kick from the far touchline. When the third try was scored by Liam Richmond it was game over.

Prior to kick off coach Jason Payne had said: ''I'm sure we will go into the game as favourites but this means nothing to us and we have prepared for the toughest game of the year. We are under no illusions as to how tough this game is going to be and we won't be complacent.

It was 18-0 after 15 minutes, more than a point a minute, which was then increased as Mitch Law spotted a gap in the Leeds defensive line and took full advantage. A mistake by Shaw, when trying to collect a crossfield kick in the swirling wind, allowed Leeds to score. This turned out to be their only try of the game and the energy and determination of the Northumbria squad was clear to see after the restart.

The chase after kick off put real pressure on the Leeds defence and the tackling in packs forced them into a goal line drop out. This relentless pressure continued into the second half and Northumbria came out rampant 68-6 victors.

Captain Sam Chapman acknowledged the fine display from his side and said Northumbria 'put in an impressive performance' and added that they are looking forward to playing Leeds Beckett in the final on Wednesday March 22 at the BUCS Big Wednesday in Bath. The two sides have met twice this season with the spoils shared, so the final could go either way.

Payne added: "I'm pleased with how the boys executed the game plan. I'm hoping they can replicate the performance in the final. It is our third consecutive final and if we win then we will have won the triple this season."
