Northumbria Boxing represented the University at the recent British Universities and College Sport’s (BUCS) Championships 2024, at the University of Portsmouth. The weekend proved to be a positive one, with the team returning up north with two gold medals and one bronze.
Jay Redpath was Northumbria’s first medal winner. He triumphed over a tough, aggressive counter puncher from Portsmouth, to bring home Northumbria’s first gold medal in his first year with the University team.
Jay was followed by Olly Munro, who picked up Northumbria’s second gold. Olly put in three impressive displays over the weekend ensuring his second visit to the Championships, in as many years, was a successful one.
Rounding off Northumbria’s medal haul was Jack Bradley who, like Olly, was returning to the Championships for his second year. Jack performed well to reach the semi-finals, and came away with a bronze medal.
Kieran Blades, Noah Munden and Austin Chigozirim Onyesonwu, were competing at the Championships for the first time in their respected weight categories. Despite not coming out on top in their bouts, club coach Ross Wilkinson, described the trio as: “brilliant,” and states how he: “can’t wait to see them in action next year.”
Lachlan Burke returned for his second year at the Championships but didn’t progress past the quarter finals. Coach Ross was full of praise for all of his returning boxers though, saying how: “Lachlan, Jack and Olly have been brilliant and continue to grow as boxers. These lads all started their boxing journeys with me and the University, with them now having 8, 5 and 13 bouts.”
BUCS 24 success has highlighted the great work put in by all at Northumbria Boxing. With a few experienced boxers due to return from injury, alongside the group who fought at BUCS 24, the team are looking forward for an even bigger and better Championships next year.
Well done to all the team who boxed in Portsmouth, from all at Northumbria Sport!
