BUCS Big Wednesday: M1 Rugby League

Northumbria University M1 Rugby League were crowned BUCS Champions this afternoon to finish off an incredible season.

Northumbria almost squandered a 24-0 lead against Leeds Beckett but held on to win 24-18, securing this year’s Championship title.

"It was a nervous one, but I'm glad it’s done,” said coach Jason Payne. “We’re absolutely over the moon – it was an incredible game to watch.

“We were playing down the hill in the first half, which gave us a lot of momentum.

“We kicked really well, completed our sets well and we won the territory battle really well, and ended up 18-0 up at half-time.

“After the break we managed to score a quick try and from then on we gave them a load of possession and were just coughing up errors.

“We were giving away penalties and had a lot of sin-bins, so to hang on was literally like hanging on for dear life in the last 25 minutes.

“I’m just so proud of the boys. We’re staying down in Bath tonight, so were going to have a couple of beers to celebrate.”
