Northumbria University provides dual career support for highly talented sporting individuals enabling students to achieve their academic and sporting potential through a dual career pathway offer. It is a priority of Northumbria University to provide a platform for student athletes to reach their educational and sporting potential.
Northumbria University looks to provide an appropriate level of support for all student sport scholarship and TASS athletes. The level of support will change depending on the representative level of the student-athlete (i.e., International, National, Regional or British University Competitive Sports (BUCS). Appropriate support is open to any talented student athletes studying at Northumbria University and is not limited to recipients of a University Scholarship or TASS award. As a dual career athlete you will benefit from accessing the Northumbria University academic flexibility policy and this document is based on this principle and is provided to give clear guidance on allowances that can be given to balance the need satisfactory academic progression with sporting commitments and the circumstances for these allowances:
What IS allowed:
- Students who are Elite Athletes i.e. national or international level athletes representing their country at a competition.
- Students who are Elite Athletes i.e. national or international level athletes representing their country at a selection event.
- Students who are Elite Athletes i.e. national or international level athletes attending a National Governing Body official training camp.
- Students who are part of a professional or semi-professional team and have a midweek fixture with an overnight stay.
- British University Competitive Sports (BUCS) and have a midweek fixtures with an overnight stay.
What IS NOT allowed:
- Evening or weekend matches as this does not interfere with University work.
- Training commitments, excluding national Governing Body training camps.
- Non-Northumbria competitions.
- Professional, semi-professional or national league competitions or training sessions that occur at weekends.
- Voluntarily coaching a team, or assisting a coach.
- Recreational sporting activities.
Supporting Evidence:
- Student athletes will be asked to provide appropriate evidence to support their request, this could be in the form of:
- Letter or email confirmation of selection from the relevant governing body e.g. Team GB or NGB.
- Letter or email confirmation of training camp details from the relevant governing body.
- Letter or email from Northumbria Sport for a BUCS fixture involving an overnight stay.
