Our Annual Event Series offers all students and staff the chance to take part in fun, inclusive, and rewarding challenges that promote physical activity, mental wellbeing, and community connection. Whether you’re just getting started with regular movement or looking for your next fitness milestone, these events are built to help you stay engaged, inspired, and supported.

The Daily Mile Challenge
February–March (returns 2026)
The Daily Mile Challenge is our flagship wellbeing event that turns everyday movement into a shared goal. In 2025, 419 students and staff signed up to walk, jog, or run one mile a day for 25 consecutive days.
Open to everyone regardless of fitness level, the challenge is designed to build daily habits, boost your energy and mood, and help you stay consistent with gentle physical activity.

- There are daily prize draws, including Amazon vouchers, gym passes, and more
- Grand prizes for consistency and milestone achievements
- Get moving with friends, flatmates, colleagues, or on your own

Northumberland 6 Peaks Challenge
June (returns June 2026)
Fancy a true outdoor adventure? The Northumberland 6 Peaks Challenge is a unique opportunity to explore the beautiful Northumberland countryside on a fully guided 16-mile hike.
In June 2025, 30 staff and students completed the hike, reaching six breathtaking summits with the support of professional walk leaders, free transport, and plenty of encouragement.
Why join?
- It’s an amazing way to connect with nature and take a break from study stress
- You’ll meet new people in a friendly, shared-goal environment
- It’s a genuine challenge, but one that’s accessible for all fitness levels
- It’s a perfect intro to hiking or long-distance walking
- All transport and guides are provided free by Northumbria Sport

Great North 5km – Northumbria Wave
September (next event: 5th September 2025)
Kick off the academic year with a bang by joining 350 Northumbria students in the Northumbria Wave of the Great North 5km – part of the world-famous Great North Run weekend.
Run, jog, or walk along the stunning Newcastle Quayside and be part of one of the UK’s biggest mass participation events.
Why join?
- You’ll receive a free race place (worth £30+)

- It’s a perfect challenge for beginners and seasoned runners alike
- Amazing atmosphere with music, crowds, and finish line celebrations

The next Great North 5km takes place on Friday, 4th September 2026, and places are sold out. Free sign-ups for the 2026 event will open following the 2025 race – follow our social media or check your emails to claim your place.
