As the dust settles on the 2017 General Election one thing is certain - Northumbria University’s Sport Central has emerged as the clear winner!
After a week when various sides have claimed victory and there are losers right, left and centre, a team of Northumbria Sport staff and students are still celebrating an incredible success.
Thanks to their speed, focus and commitment Newcastle Central was the first constituency in the UK to return its result on election night - ending the domination of local rivals on Wearside.
And Sport Central became the subject of frenzied national and international television coverage as an incredible result hit home.
“We had around 30 of our amazing volunteers help run the General Election night held at Sport central,” explained outgoing Student Sport President Emily Watkinson.
“The volunteers’ job was to run the ballot boxes from the cars outside to the counters as fast as they could.
“Houghton and Sunderland South had won this race for the past six years and this year the pressure was on more than ever to beat them.
“It was never in doubt…and we did just that! It was such a great atmosphere and an incredible event to be a part of.
“Our volunteers did themselves proud. And it didn’t go unnoticed. We had social media comments from the likes of Gabby Logan and Gary Lineker.
“We also had loads of media coverage with our students featuring on The One Show, Sky News, Metro Radio and BBC Radio Newcastle.
“And the icing on the cake was that the money raised from our students being a part of this goes to help our Volunteer Zambia students’ group fundraising total!
“They head to Zambia this summer to do incredible work through sport so we wish them all the best!”
