
British University College Sport (BUCS) have announced the nominees for their annual awards and Northumbria Sport are proud to announce the Daily Mile programme has been shortlisted for Active Wellbeing Award our Swimming Club have been nominated for Club of the Year.
The Daily Mile
The Daily Mile programme was brand-new for 2025 and aimed to improve wellbeing through inclusive, flexible physical activity over a 25-day period. The programme successfully engaged more than 400 students and staff across 20 countries and received positive feedback.
Northumbria Student, Cameron said: "I enjoyed the mile challenge and enjoyed completing it with friends along the way."
On being shortlisted, Andy Barton Sport Development Manager who led the campaign said: "I’m delighted we have been shortlisted for this award. Our flexible, participant-led ‘your mile, your way’ approach was particularly effective in engaging underrepresented groups, something we’re especially proud of."
In this category Northumbria are up against the University of Nottingham and Students’ Union UCL.
Swimming
Our Swimming Club has now been recognised as one of the top three student sports clubs in the UK by BUCS, where Northumbria are up against University of Birmingham’s Tennis Club and University of Nottingham’s Wheelchair Basketball Club.
The Club’s President, Rebecca Smith said: “It’s amazing to have been shortlisted for this award, and to have been recognised on a national scale by BUCS! It’s credit to all the hard work and dedication of our committee and members.”
Heather Steel, Northumbria’s Student Sport Manager said: “We are so proud of how hard the swimming club committee have worked to transform the club. The work they have done has raised participation levels in swimming, improving member experience, provided funding for worthwhile causes and supported key campaigns to drive change.”
This is the first time since 2017 that Northumbria Sport have been shortlisted for an award at the annual BUCS event.
