Northumbria Alumni Sam Luckley Clinches Historic Treble with Hull KR

Northumbria Sport is celebrating one of its own as former sport scholar and Northumbria graduate, Sam Luckley has helped Hull Kingston Rovers secure an unprecedented treble in the 2025 rugby league season.

The Robins claimed the Challenge Cup, the League Leaders' Shield, and completed the historic sweep with a Super League Grand Final victory over Wigan Warriors—the club's most successful campaign in its 143-year history.

Luckley, 29, from North Shields and a lifelong Newcastle United supporter, built the foundation for his success at Northumbria University. After initially enrolling in a part-time Business Management course, he switched to a BSc in Sport Coaching before earning an MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Throughout his studies, he benefited from Northumbria's sport scholarship programme, which supports elite student-athletes in balancing academic studies with sporting ambition.

His professional rugby league career began with Newcastle Thunder where he played alongside his studies, before moving to Salford Red Devils and Swinton Lions. Since joining Hull KR in 2023, Luckley's powerful performances and strong work ethic have made him a fans' favourite.

We spoke to Sam about his achievements, he said: “To win the treble with this group of lads is unbelievable. It’s something you dream of as a kid, and to actually do it – I’m buzzing. The hard work, the setbacks, the graft – it’s all been worth it.

He continued: “Being part of the Rugby League programme at Northumbria played a big part in getting me here, and I’m proud to have come through that pathway and now be part of this team.”

Jason Payne, Head of Rugby League at Northumbria said: “It’s been amazing to see how far Sam’s come since his time with us at Northumbria. As someone who coached him, it’s always a buzz watching players kick on and do big things. We’re all really proud of what he’s achieved.”

Luckley's success exemplifies the opportunities Northumbria provides to student-athletes. His story demonstrates the university's dedication to nurturing sporting talent through scholarships, expert coaching, and academic flexibility—enabling students to thrive in the classroom and in competition through the dual-career offer.

Sam will continue to play for Hull KR until 2027 after his contract was extended.
