Northumbria University tackled their cross-city rivals in the first ever Tyneside University Sport Challenge (TUSC) to celebrate the culmination of another academic year.

Northumbria students from NORTH clubs competed against students from the Newcastle University Intramural programme in five different sports.

Johnny Tulip, who helped pioneer the event, believes the competition will enhance the students’ university experience and strengthen links between two sporting powerhouses.

“It’s great to be able to give this kind of opportunity to the students who work so hard and give their all to our NORTH participation programme across the year,” said Tulip.

“The guys take ownership of each aspect of their own teams across the year from administration and squad selection through to designing their own kits.

“They get to see the performance teams compete in the Stan Calvert competition each year so it’s been fantastic to be able to provide a similar opportunity to the NORTH clubs.

“The event was a big success and I’d like to thank all of those players, officials and coaches which made this possible.”

TUSC sports included women’s and men’s football, netball and basketball and was, for many students, the first experience of a competitive fixture.

An impressive total of 155 players were involved in the week-long competition – testimony to the substantial interest in participating in a competitive environment.

Denis Murphy, participation and events manager at Newcastle University, highlighted the successes of the event and impressive standard of play.

“The festival of sport tournament was a great success,” said Murphy. “It was fantastic to see so many students engaged in the various fixtures.

“I would like to thank all of the students who participated for their commitment and enthusiasm.”
