Northumbria Sport Scholar, Simone Abley, tasted success at both the winter and spring BUCS Taekwondo Championships, which helped maintain her 100% BUCS record across her five years at university.
Over the course of the two events, Simone competed three times: once at the winter championships and twice at the spring championships. The seasons may have changed but the result did not, with Simone achieving gold in the 67kg Female World Taekwondo series in both championships, alongside adding another gold to her collection in the 67kg Female International Taekwondo Federation in the spring.
Simone’s three gold medals attained across the course of the academic year have added to an already stellar medal collection in a promising amateur career with Simone explaining: “I have 100% success rate at BUCS through my five years at university.”
Not only this, but BUCS success is complemented impressively by being European University Games Champion 2022, as well as achieving a bronze medal in the 2023 EUSA Combat Games. She has also qualified for the European University Games 2024, taking place in Hungary!
When asked about her experience at Northumbria, Simone describes how: “Northumbria have supported by helping with booking the competitions for me, the strength and conditioning sessions have helped me stay injury free and they have reminded me to enter the competitions as sometimes it came close to me forgetting!”
All at Northumbria Sport wish Simone the best of luck with the European University Games and future competitions, we can’t wait to hear all about it!
