🌍 Sport Central – Our Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

At Northumbria Sport, we are proud to play our part in creating a more sustainable future. Every step we take helps reduce our impact on the planet while supporting the wellbeing of our community.

💡 Energy Efficiency

  • We have introduced LED lighting across the facility, cutting energy use by up to 60% compared to traditional bulbs.
  • Our lighting is supported by automatic sensors in key areas to reduce unnecessary usage.
  • Solar panels installed on Sport Central’s roof – the largest flat roof space on campus – generating clean, renewable energy to power our facilities.

💧 Water Conservation

  • Push-tap and sensor-operated systems help prevent water wastage.
  • Showers and toilets are designed with low-flow technology to minimise use.
  • Our rainwater harvesting system collects rainwater and reuses it for toilet flushing, reducing demand on mains water.

♻️ Waste Reduction

  • Dedicated recycling points across the building make it easy to separate waste responsibly.
  • We encourage staff, students and visitors to refill reusable water bottles at our free hydration stations, reducing single-use plastics.

🚶 Sustainable Travel

  • Sport Central is located close to public transport links to encourage walking, cycling, and Metro use.
  • Bike racks and cycle facilities support greener commuting choices.

🌱 Our Ongoing Commitment

  • We continuously review and improve our practices to align with Northumbria University’s Sustainability Strategy. Together, we can make a difference – helping protect our planet for future generations of students, athletes and the wider community.
