Student’s Union to Host Varsity Fan Zone

To celebrate Northumbria and Newcastle Universities going head-to-head in Varsity fixtures across the day, Domain will be transformed into a Fan Zone on Friday 22 March, for students and staff to enjoy for FREE. With food and drink available, along with lots more to get involved with, everyone is encouraged to come along, watch some fixtures and get into the Varsity spirit!

The Fan Zone, found in Domain on the first floor of the student’s union, will be open from 1500 – 1900, ahead of the finale fixtures of Varsity, with Volleyball M1, Netball W1 and Futsal M1 all in action right here at Sport Central at 1930.

The Fan Zone Bar will be open from 1500, so whether you have attended fixtures earlier in the day and are in need of a pint, or whether you are wanting an early start to the weekend, the Fan Zone has you covered - with various drinks deals on throughout the day. Food will also be available, with popcorn and candyfloss machines available amongst other snacks.

Varsity marks a massive day on the Northumbria Sport calendar, therefore, we aim to make it a day to remember with lots of Fan Zone activities to get involved with. These include:

  • Selfie Pod
  • Facepainting
  • Racing Simulator
  • Pac-Man Machine
  • Buzzwire
  • Roll and Bowl Machine
  • Pong Machine

Not only this, but students will be able to still get a taste of the Varsity action whilst enjoying the Fan Zone, as Rugby Union M2 (1500) will be live streamed in Domain followed by Rugby League M2 (1830). Doors from Domain straight into Sport Central will be open, making it a short walk for students to attend the finale fixtures at 1930.

Your support at fixtures will go a long way in helping Northumbria bring home the Varsity trophy, with Vice President of Sport, Harvey Burn, explaining how: "I think Varsity is the best example of the University and students coming together as a community to cheer on our teams and share a sense of pride."

When asked about the Fan Zone, Harvey says: "This will be the third year of the Fan Zone and it is promising to be the best one yet, we've worked with the University and the students to offer games, food and drink deals, as well as live streamed Varsity fixtures." He concludes by encouraging students to: "Bring a lively and supportive atmosphere and get behind the teams at games and in the Fan Zone."

Students wishing to go even further in their support of Northumbria are able to purchase Varsity t-shirts. These will be available for just £5 at Sport Central reception and the on-campus shop from Monday 11 March.

The day promises to be a great occasion and we can’t wait to see you in Domain for all things Varsity!
