Northumbria Sport offer several different scholarship packages depending on the standard of sport at which athletes are currently competing at. If you wish to apply for a 2018-19 scholarship you will be required to complete the online application form.

Individual Athlete Scholarships

GOLD – Podium Potential Scholarship

This scholarship is designed to support student-athletes with the potential to progress in to a podium position. These student-athletes are currently in or on the fringe of the senior national programme, divisional squad or equivalent. It will be offered to athletes in sports that are not currently part of our high performance squad programme.

  • 2-3 weekly Strength & Conditioning sessions – one to one or group sessions
  • Access to physiotherapy and massage
  • Free sports membership
  • Individual Sports Psychology
  • Athlete Education Workshops
  • Adidas kit package
  • Sport Science support
  • Financial support ranging from £1,550-£8,000

SILVER – National Performance Scholarships

This scholarship is designed to support student-athletes with the potential to progress in to a senior national team. These student-athletes have been in a junior national team programme within the last 18 months, divisional squad or equivalent. It will be offered to athletes in sports that are not currently part of our high performance squad programme.

  • 2-3 weekly Strength & Conditioning sessions – one to one or group session
  • Access to physiotherapy and massage
  • Free sports membership
  • Athlete Education Workshops
  • Adidas kit package
  • Financial support up to a maximum of £1,500

BRONZE – Talent Development Scholarships

This scholarship is designed to support talented student-athletes who are at the development stage. These student-athletes are will be part of an NGB regional squad or equivalent. It will be offered to athletes in sports that are not currently part of our high performance squad programme.

  • 2-3 weekly Strength & Conditioning sessions – one to one or group session
  • physiotherapy

  • Athlete Education Workshops
  • Adidas kit package

Additional Information

  • Students applying for a scholarship must have applied for an academic course of study before they submit a scholarship application
  • Decisions on awarding scholarships will take into consideration a number of factors including our competitive requirements for the year
  • Priority will be given to athletes that complete in a sport that is part of the British University and College Sport League (BUCS)
  • Please note that the criteria for scholarship are just guidelines and not all applications fitting the criteria will be successful
  • Any athletes can only request up to £3,000 to be paid as living contribution, amounts awarded over £3,000 will be paid as a contribution to course fees or accommodation 

Scholarship applications will open in December for the 2018-19 academic year. 

Other Scholarships

Northumbria University, along with 11 other UK universities, receives generous funding from the R&A Foundation to assist with the education and development of talented young golfers and to enhance the standard of university golf. The R&A foundation also awards individual scholarships to selected students in full time education who meet minimum criteria of +1 or better for men, and 3 or better for women. Students wishing to make application for a scholarship should apply via www.randa.org.


The Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) is a government funded programme to support and fast-track young sporting talent, the potential medal winners of the future! TASS offers sport specific services to young athletes with sporting promise in a wide range of sports, with the aim of helping them fulfil their sporting potential whilst continuing their education. TASS provides athletes with a tailored package of services worth up to £3500 in value. Awards are granted on an annual basis with nominations made by their individual sporting National Governing Bodies.

Once accepted onto the scheme, support is provided through a network of accredited Universities and Colleges throughout England. As a TASS partner institution Team Northumbria has a great deal of experience servicing TASS athletes studying at Northumbria University.
