Scholarships

Northumbria University are a leading institution for sport and offers a wide variety of opportunities for students looking to be involved in a quality competitive programme. This year Northumbria Sport have over 54 teams entered in the British University and Colleague Sport Leagues (BUCS).

Northumbria Sport supports around 150 student athletes each year across a range of sports through our tailored sports scholarship programme. Northumbria Sport offer scholarships to support athletes to have a dual career, enabling athletes to develop their sporting ability whilst gaining a quality degree.

We understand the demands of being a student athlete and we aim to support you to have a well-rounded approach to life. Our team of professional support staff work together to offer multi-disciplinary support in a high performance environment. By combining this with additional opportunities within our volunteering, community, and student development programmes we aim to support you to build on your personal skills and profile in preparation for life after University.

Scholarship Terms and Conditions

*Scholarship applications will be assessed at two points throughout the year. The application deadline for round one is the 1st May 2019. Any applications received before 1st May 2019 will be assessed, please note your application may be deferred to round two. Applications received after the 1st May 2019 will be assessed on the 1st September 2019.

Northumbria University have six focus sports and we are committed to providing a performance hub environment with an athlete-centred approach within these sports. Northumbria are ranked highly within BUCS in these sports and have a strong local and national profile. These sports receive significant investment in coaching, scholarships and professional support to ensure we are a leading institution within these sports with the ambition to be number one in the UK.

Northumbria Sports focus sports include Aquatics (Para swimming and water polo), Basketball (men and women), Football (men and women), Rugby League (men), Rugby Union (men and women) and Volleyball (men and women).

Successful applications for one of our focus sport scholarships will be given access to a performance sport environment and holistic support service programme that are tailored to the needs of each sport. Our focus sport scholarships include the following:

  • Financial support up to £8,000
  • Specialist strength & conditioning coaching and facilities
  • Performance analysis support
  • Physiotherapy treatment and rehabilitation support
  • Unlimited access to Sport Central fitness facilities including pool access
  • Anti-doping workshops and support
  • Performance lifestyle support
  • Group and one-to-one sport psychology support
  • Group and one-to-one nutritional advice
  • Employability support
  • Dual career and academic flexibility support

Para Sport Scholarship

The Faster, Higher, Stronger Fund supports continued excellence in Paralympic and disability sport and is dedicated to supporting athletes competing at elite level. This dedicated scholarship offers financial support that can be used towards University tuition fees, University owned accommodation or directly to the student athlete to support their ambition to perform on the world stage. Successful applicants will work closely with the Performance Sport Manager to agree a tailored package of support services to support the needs of each student athlete.

Podium Potential Scholarship

Student athletes that are on an NGB Performance Pathway within their sport (not including our focus sports) and competing at a National or International level can apply for one of our podium potential awards.

There Successful applications for one of our podium potential scholarships will given access to a holistic support service programme that is tailored meet your individual needs. Our podium potential scholarships include the following:

  • Financial support up to £5,000
  • Specialist strength & conditioning coaching and facilities
  • Physiotherapy treatment and rehabilitation support
  • Unlimited access to Sport Central fitness facilities including pool access
  • Anti-doping workshops and support
  • Performance lifestyle support
  • Sport psychology support
  • Nutritional advice
  • Employability support
  • Dual career and academic flexibility support

TASS at Northumbria University

TASS is an athlete support programme to help talented athletes with balancing the demands of their sport and studies to be the best in both.

Backed by Sport England, the TASS partnership brings together student athletes, education institutions and sports to support our country’s most exciting young talents.

Each year, hundreds of student athletes benefit from a programme of support services delivered by experienced practitioners at education institutions across England.

TASS is dedicated to developing its network of performance sport experts and continues to lead the way in providing lifestyle and wellbeing support for athletes in education.

In 2018-19, more than 600 talented athletes from 32 different sports are benefitting from support services at one of 33 TASS Delivery Sites.

Northumbria University is proud to be a TASS Delivery Site this year. The support services available to TASS athletes include:

  • Lifestyle
  • Physiotherapy
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Personal development (nutrition, psychology, further lifestyle)
  • TASS Medical Scheme & Bupa Healthy Minds

Sport Newcastle Scholarship

Northumbria University work in partnership with local charity Sport Newcastle to support young people to help them to achieve their sporting dreams.

In collaboration with Sport Newcastle Northumbria University will be offering one sport scholarship to a local talented young athlete studying at Northumbria University. The award is an annual award of £1,500 for up to 3 years.

Criteria

  • Successful individuals must meet Northumbria University Sport Scholarship 2019-20 terms and conditions.
  • Provide 4 progress reports to be published on the Sport Newcastle website
  • Successful individuals will most likely be regional, national or international standard in their chosen sport.
  • Currently live in Newcastle, or Educated in Newcastle, or affiliated to a Newcastle team or club.

The highlight of the Sport Newcastle Year is the Annual Gala Award Dinner staged at Newcastle Civic Centre - a star studded affair attended by the city's sporting heroes of the past, present, and future and culminating in the presentation of the prestigious Sports Personality of the Year Award. The successful candidate will be invited to the Gala Dinner.

Scholarship Terms and Conditions

Royal and Ancient Golf Bursary

Northumbria University are one of 17 University’s supported by the Royal and Ancient. Each year the R&A invests more than £300,000 in student and university golf. Currently, the R&A supports golf programmes at seventeen universities and awards 100 individual foundation scholarships to players from all over the world

The centrepiece of the year is the annual R&A Foundation Scholars Tournament. The contest is held in St Andrews in April over 54 holes. The tournament offers the leading man a place on the European Palmer Cup team to face the USA, with the leading woman receiving a starting place at a Ladies European Tour event. The event carries World Amateur Golf Ranking points.

Funding towards golf or education related items (i.e. tuition fees, books, accommodation, golf memberships etc)

Individual applicants for the R&A Scholarship must be in full-time, tertiary education. Male applicants must hold a handicap of +1 or better, while female applicants must be 2 or below. Applications will also be considered for players who have been selected for a national team or squad, even if they do not meet the handicap requirements.
