Netball Superleague

Team Northumbria is the name for top flight netball in the North East. They compete in the Vitality Netball Superleague with nine other teams and the season runs February-May.

Their home venue is Sport Central, in the city centre of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Team Northumbria’s home ground is Sport Central, which  is a multi-purpose built sports centre and events arena in Newcastle upon Tyne. It forms part of the Northumbria University campus, in the city centre.

National Performance League

The National Performance League consists of 10 teams of players aged between 14 and 19, who are selected to represent the Youth squad's of the 8 NSL franchises as well as the Midlands and Yorkshire regions.  The players are in the athlete pathway for progression to possibly become future NSL players.

Over January - May, each team will play each other twice home and away within their region the league structure having two regions North & South. After the round robin competition teams will then play across regions with an NPL Champion crowned at the end of the competition.

This national competition is organised by England Netball but the development of the teams and the athletes within the teams is a collaboration between the Superleague Franchises, Regional Management Boards (RMBs) and England Netball. Either the Superleague Franchise or Regional Management Board will take the lead for the team management in relation to this competition.

Team Northumbria train and play at the £30 million Sports Central, Northumbria University, one of the finest sports facilities in the UK. The training days for NPL are Mondays and Thursdays, with each session lasting 2.5 hours. Training start dates and a calendar of key dates will be handed out at trials.

Community

Team Northumbria is offering schools, clubs and other organisations the opportunity to receive visits by Superleague players and coaches. This could involve coaching sessions, a motivational speech or a workshop on a specific area/topic. Packages are tailored to meet the needs of your specific group. Team Northumbria is the Netball Superleague franchise of Northumbria University and is the only Superleague netball team in the North East. Team Northumbria competes in the 10 team ’top flight’ tier of UK netball covered by Sky Sports. The 2017 Team Northumbria squad hosts a mix of regional, national and international players, guaranteed to make the season exciting! Team Northumbria has a very strong regional following. Games have a family atmosphere with the majority of spectators being mums and daughters. Team Northumbria boasts a squad of strong female role models, which in itself is both refreshing and inspirational.

Netball is a rapidly growing sport for participants and spectators following recent success and media coverage of the Commonwealth Games and Netball World Cup. As well as competing in the Superleague, Team Northumbria also has a very extensive community programme engaging with schools, clubs and young people from across the North East. Players and coaches conduct school and club visits, coaching masterclasses and kidscamps. There is also an extensive player and competitive pathway from junior to senior level.

The Netball Superleague is covered by Sky Sports. Team Northumbria also has a strong local presence with articles featuring regularly in the press. Social media is also a primary tool for spectator engagement, with very active Twitter and Facebook accounts.
