We have successfully received Sport Relief funding to launch a Try For Change programme aimed at refugees and asylum seekers in partnership with the West End Refugee Service (WERS). Clients of WERS have come to the UK from a range of nations and for a variety of reasons, including war, extreme poverty, famine, and persecution. They have then been placed in Newcastle, most likely with limited knowledge of the area and with no friends or family. Due to these issues, and many more they face, refugees and asylum seekers are at a higher risk to experience poor physical and mental health, as well as becoming socially excluded. This project aims to improve the health of participants, help them feel included in society, and ultimately support the local community. To help with this, Northumberland RFU, Newcastle Falcons Foundation, and West End RFC are also supporting this project to ensure long term pathways and support are in place.
Although this project is delivered in partnership with WERS, and targeted at their clients, it is open to all males over the age of 18 who wish to take part. Sessions will focus on introducing rugby skills, games, and fitness. Sessions are free as they are fully funded by Sport Relief and the Northumbria Sport Foundation.
Sessions will commence on 15th January 2018
Days: Mondays 3.30pm - 5pm
Venue: Sport Central, Northumbria University, NE1 8ST (indoor sports hall)
Cost: Free - Just turn up and play
